Criminal Defence Lawyers in Grimsby

Your Case. Our Cause

Being accused of a crime is unsettling, whatever the allegation. Michael Culshaw & Co represent people in Grimsby and across North East Lincolnshire who are under investigation or have been charged with an offence, and we work to protect their rights at every stage.

What criminal defence covers

Criminal defence is the work of representing someone who is being investigated by the police or prosecuted in court. It runs from a first interview at the police station through to a trial or a sentencing hearing.

The earlier a solicitor is involved, the more can be done. A well prepared interview, or evidence reviewed early, can change the direction of a case.

How a criminal case progresses

  • Investigation: the police gather evidence and may interview you, either under arrest or as a voluntary attendee.
  • Decision: after the investigation you may be charged, released on bail, released under investigation, or told that no further action will be taken.
  • First hearing: every criminal case begins in the magistrates court, where you are asked to indicate a plea.
  • Trial or sentence: if you plead not guilty, the case is listed for trial in the magistrates court or the Crown Court, depending on the offence. If you plead guilty, the court moves to sentence.

How we work for you

We examine the prosecution evidence in detail, explain the options open to you in plain terms, and prepare your case for every hearing. Throughout, we keep you informed about what is happening and what comes next.

Common questions

Do I have to answer police questions?

You have the right to remain silent. The caution warns that it may harm your defence if you do not mention something you later rely on in court, which is one reason why a solicitor's involvement before an interview matters.

What does released under investigation mean?

It means the police have released you without charge and without bail conditions while their enquiries continue. The investigation can still lead to a charge later.

Can a case be dropped before it reaches court?

Yes. The police can decide to take no further action, and the Crown Prosecution Service can stop a case if it decides there is not enough evidence or that a prosecution is not in the public interest.
