The Crown Court deals with the most serious criminal cases. Michael Culshaw & Co represent clients whose cases are sent to the Crown Court, preparing each case thoroughly from the outset.
Which cases go to the Crown Court
Indictable only offences are always heard in the Crown Court. Either way offences can be sent there if the magistrates decide their sentencing powers are not enough, or if you choose trial by jury. The Crown Court also sentences cases committed from the magistrates court and hears appeals against magistrates court decisions.
Trial by jury
At a Crown Court trial the verdict is decided by a jury of twelve people. The judge rules on questions of law and, if there is a conviction, decides the sentence.

Common questions
How long does a Crown Court case take?
It varies with each case. Crown Court cases often take many months from the first hearing to trial, depending on the evidence involved and the court's list.
Do I have to give evidence at my trial?
No, you cannot be made to give evidence. However, the jury may be told that it can draw conclusions if you choose not to, so it is an important decision to discuss with your legal team before the trial.
Can a Crown Court decision be appealed?
Appeals against a Crown Court conviction or sentence go to the Court of Appeal, and permission is usually needed. There are strict time limits for starting an appeal.
